Boy fell and hit head on train step
A 12-year-old boy who was struck by a train last week slipped and hit his head on the doorstep of a moving carriage, the Post can reveal.
It is understood the lad was running alongside the train as it was pulling out from the station on Saturday, January 23 around 7.20pm.
Sources have confirmed the freak accident occurred as the boy waved off pals who were still aboard the moving train.
The Ayr schoolboy remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital after suffering a serious head injury.
Last week we told how the injury left him fighting for his life in a coma.
It is understood his condition is no longer life threatening.
A source confirmed: “This was a freak accident with terrible consequences.
“He has slipped on the platform whilst running to wave at his friends who were on the train.
“It’s just a devastating incident.” Emergency services raced to the scene and the boy was taken to hospital.
Trains were sent straight through the station in the aftermath of the incident with platforms reopened several hours later.
British Transport Police this week have confirmed that the youngster “slipped” which led to him smashing into the moving train.
A spokesperson for the railway force said yesterday (Tuesday): “Officers have conducted a number enquiries into the incident at Prestwick Town station on January 23, and have concluded the 12-yearold boy slipped and sadly sustained injuries after falling between the platform and a train.
And they added: “He is now in a stable condition in hospital and his family continue to be supported by officers.”
