Brett: I can be a loan star

Ayr new boy Brett McGavin insists he can become the latest Ipswich loan star to be a smash hit at Somerset Park.

The midfielder, 21, has joined Portman Road teammate Corrie Ndaba in South Ayrshire for the rest of the season.

And the pair will bid to emulate fellow Tractor Boy, Aaron Drinan, who was a roaring success during a short term stint at United last year.

Highly rated McGavin, who spent time on trial at Ayr with Drinan last January, told the Post: “A really good link has developed between the clubs and that made it an attractive move for me.

“Both myself and Corrie are good friends with Aaron and he was nothing but positive about his time up here.

“He came back down to Ipswich and said how much he’d enjoyed it and how much he’d been looked after, so it should be great for me and Corrie.

“I’m sure we won’t be the last lads to come up if things keep going this well.”

McGavin (above), who has made six first team starts under Paul Lambert this season, is seen as a bright prospect for the future and penned a two-year deal in September.

He said: “I’m happy with where I am in my career but for me, the important thing at this stage is to play competitive men’s football on a regular basis.

“That is what will ultimately help my development the most and that’s why I’ve come to Ayr.

“The manager here has spoken to me about his ambitions and what he wants from this season and I’m coming into a team that is wanting to progress up the table.

“That can only be a good thing for me and I’m looking forward to making a good impression.”

McGavin, who plays as a deep lying midfielder, has been praised by United boss Mark Kerr as a signing with real potential for the Honest Men.

Ane he’s hoping to make a quick impact after stepping off the bench during the second half against Hearts on Friday night.

He added: “I’m looking forward to testing myself in what is obviously a very competitive league.

“We’ve got some very good players here and the standard in training has been really high – the technical ability of some of the lads is at a very good level.”
