Spread of virus cut across town

Ayr town centre has now been Covid-free for two weeks running as the rate of coronaviru­s continues to drop across South Ayrshire.

Areas on both sides of Ayr, South Ayrshire harbour including the town centre, Wallacetow­n and Newton South are all showing that the virus has been suppressed with between 0-2 positive tests recorded.

It comes as the weekly case rate per 100,000 of the population sits at 110.1- a drop in 24 since last week, with the test rate falling by 0.2 per cent to 5.3.

Along with Ayr, the virus is suppressed in four other zones across South Ayrshire with nearby Castlehill and Kincadisto­n and Craigie joining Troon and Muirhead to make up six areas.

Although last week seven areas had managed to suppress COVID-19, eight areas have five or less cases of coronaviru­s in the period between January 30 and February 5.

The local neighbourh­ood data released by the Scottish Government shows that Lochside, Braehead and Whitletts, Carrick South, Carrick North, Alloway and Doonfoot, Maybole, Belmont, Prestwick East, Prestwick West and Heathfield are all showing a major drop in cases.

Heathfield which was the Covid hotspot in South Ayrshire has seen a drop in positive cases with just five testing for coronaviru­s in just one week.

Girvan Glendoune has seen the biggest increase in infections over the past week with a rate of 313 per 100,000 and 10 new positive cases.

Coylton is also showing a high rate of infections with 238 per 100,000 with nine new positive cases.

Sadly there were 13 deaths registered in the National Records of Scotland between January 25 to 31 in South Ayrshire.

The virus has become suppressed in Drongan, East Ayrshire, whilst in Cumnock there has been 17 new positive cases. Auchinleck has a high case rate of 247.3 per 100,000 with nine positive tests in a seven day period.

Across South Ayrshire 7,934 vaccines have been administer­ed up to January 31 with 9,310 in neighourio­ng East Ayrshire.
