Kerr: We must be clinical

- STUART WILSON

Mark Kerr admits Ayr must find their shooting boots again if they want to arrest their slide.

The boss was left ruing missed chances as United drew another blank in the defeat against Caley.

And he insists his team must learn to be more clinical if they’re to snap a run which has them in desperate need of points.

He said: “I don’t know how many good clearcut chances we had and we didn’t stick them away.

“There wasn’t a lot in the game because of the conditions but Inverness were clinical.

“This result has put us in a horrible position and we need to start hitting the back of the net.

“But that’s the way it is this season... one result can flip things so much.

“We’re not coming away from any game saying we’re being battered by teams. “We’re just not getting the break at the moment.”

Ayr had suffered a selection blow on the eve of the game when new striker Dre Wright pulled his groin.

And that left United badly missing a physical presence up top against the streetwise Highlanders.

Kerr said: “We put the ball in their box about 20 times in the first half and their centre halves were standing heading it back out.

“We’ve known we’re a bit light through the middle which is why we worked so hard to get in a number nine.

“So losing Dre has killed us a bit.”

But the boss insisted his men still had the opportunities to take something on a tough afternoon.

He said: “We still started well and I felt it was a matter of waiting until we scored in that first half.

“It’s a case of fine margins and we’ve had a disallowed goal which I thought was very soft.

“These are the things you need to go for you.

“But in saying that, you cannot go in behind at the break when you’ve had the wind.

“It was a sickener to lose the goal the way we did.

“We should never have put ourselves in that position in the game.”
