AYR BOSS KNOWSTO BEWARE

Hopkin fires players Clyde warning

- STUART WILSON

David Hopkin insists Ayr won’t get a Scottish Cup freebie against shattered Clyde.

The Bully Wee head to Somerset on Saturday in the midst of a packed postlockdown fixture schedule. Danny Lennon’s men were at Peterhead on Tuesday and go to East Fife tomorrow night (Thursday).

But Hopkin reckons his side cannot expect anything less than a tough test with a place in the last 16 up for grabs.

He said: “It’s a hard run for them but sometimes players prefer games to come thick and fast.

“We have to approach it right because Clyde will come and sit in and look to frustrate us.

“And any team that has David Goodwillie can always hurt you.

“He’s a fantastic footballer who is always capable of scoring goals.

“But at the same time, we realise this is a chance to go on a wee run and progress in the cup, which would be great for the club.”

United would land a £40,000 payday if making Round Four with the potential for another £32,500 if their tie was one of four on telly.

Corrie Ndaba should be okay to return after coming off at Elgin.

Joe Chalmers missed out on Saturday’s trip to Alloa after a knock to the back of his knee in training and will be assessed this week.

Jamie Barjonas, who limped off after coming on as a sub at the Indodrill, will also be monitored after taking a bang to the knee.

Hopkin added Falkirk midfielder Josh Todd on Monday following the early departure of Cammy Smith to start a new life in America.

The boss said: “Josh is a good player with plenty of attributes and knows this league well.”

Dario Zanatta has signed a precontract with Raith.
