Dad and son guilty of murder bid charge

-

A jealous dad-of-10 teamed up with his “minder” son to attack his estranged lover’s new boyfriend.

Ian Whiteford was angry the woman had left him and found herself another man.

The 48-year-old and his son, Daniel Whiteford, 27, then turned up at the couple’s home in Ayr on October 14, 2019.

The duo, of Patna, pretended to be police, burst in before trying to kill the man during a horror blade attack.

Ian Whiteford turned on his ex before posting intimate photos of her online.

The pair were last week convicted of attempting to murder the man following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow.

Ian Whiteford was also found guilty of assaulting the woman, sending an abusive voicemail to her and causing fear and alarm by disclosing the personal photos.

He was jailed for 10 years while his son was locked up for five years and six months.

Ian Whiteford will also serve 619 days of a previous High Court sentence before beginning his latest jail term.

Lady Rae said: “In my view Ian Whiteford is a man who, if he doesn’t get his way, you will commit offences.

“You are a man with previous convictions for domestic violence who believes women should be sub servant to your wishes which is an attitude totally unacceptable in 21st century Scotland.

“What an example you are setting to your 10 children, one of whom is along with you.

“Daniel Whiteford, you have a bad record and have issues with domestic violence.

“You chose to join your father in this appalling enterprise of violence.”

Neither victim can be named for legal reasons.

The court heard how the woman had split from Ian Whiteford and that she had then “moved on” with a new partner.

In evidence, Daniel Whiteford admitted he had gone to the couple’s home - but denied his dad was with him.

He insisted he had only went there to drop off belongings the woman had left behind.

Daniel Whiteford also bizarrely stated he was concerned she might be “dead” as there had been no recent contact from her.

But, prosecutors said the father and son stormed up and did “pretend to be police officers”, kicked down the front door and turned violent.

Daniel Whiteford claimed it was the woman’s new partner who attacked him.

The victim was badly hurt including a nasty injury to his face - but Daniel Whiteford said he “did not know what happened.”

He added any injuries to the woman were a “mystery” to him.

She was said to have been dragged into a bedroom by Ian Whiteford and assaulted.

But, prosecutor Chris McIntosh put to Daniel Whiteford: “The truth is that you were there with your dad.

“He was jealous that the woman had moved on and you went as a minder for him.”

Whiteford replied: “That’s not true.”

Mr McIntosh added: “Outside the flat, both of you were kicking the door and saying that you were police officers.”

He again denied the accusation. Daniel Whiteford also insisted he was not “making up a story” to “fool the jury.”

Ian Whiteford is a man who, if he doesn’t get his way, will commit offences.
