Corri: SNP has become ‘cosy’

Former MP explains Alba bid

- SARAH HILLEY

Alba MSP candidate Corri Wilson believes her ex party have put off urgently chasing independence and are too “cosy.”

The 56-year-old grandmother claims politics has become toxic and said some SNP policies such as on hate crime have been government rather than memberled.

The former Ayr SNP MP is bidding to become a list MSP for South Scotland.

Ms Wilson said some SNP members have told her “privately” they will vote for Alba, which is led by Alex Salmond.

Ms Wilson said: “My entire political career has been about independence.

“That is why I was in the SNP. “In the 10 years they (the SNP) have been in government we have ended up too cosy and comfy.

“The SNP I knew was memberled. When the Alba party came along and the main driver was independence nothing was going to stop me.

“It feels like independence has been kicked down the road. “There is no urgency.

“We need independence for recovery from the pandemic and Brexit.”

Ms Wilson, who used to be an Ayr East councillor before being elected as an MP in 2015, urges people to read the Alba manifesto.

Free school breakfasts and lunches for nursery, primary and secondary pupils is one of the policies.

Ms Wilson said: “We are here to shake things up a bit.

“So much money has been put into different projects in different areas. It is not making any difference.

“The South Scotland region has been forgotten about.

“I want to put the south of Scotland back on the map, put in the spotlight and get investment.

“Lots of businesses are in big trouble because of the pandemic.”

Ms Wilson said recovery is the biggest concern.

Alba is urging traditional SNP supporters to vote for it on the regional ballot paper on Thursday for an independence ‘super majority.’
