Ayrshire Post

Alternative view

Dear Editor,

I thought I might just send you a note to say that not all golfers subscribe to the view that Bob Shields portrayed in his weekly column in the Ayrshire Post and the lengthy amount of jingoism on the letters page.

Frankly, I was appalled at the Victorian viewpoint and lack of economic reality portrayed in his column.

However what flabbergasted me was his relevance to Lee Trevino and affordable golf for all.

Astonishing considering those whose cause he is championing have had a monopolistic hold on the access to golf for years from Ayrshire residents.

I could go on but the reality is change is inevitable and GSA have had made the effort to stop discrimination and level the playing field for all.

Having been a member of a private club golf club for a number of years it is remarkable that those doing the complaining cannot see the benefits on offer within the South Ayrshire package. Guess they never had it so good.

However, so at the risk of being a pariah, lets give credit where credit’s due, It’s not been perfect, it’s been a rocky road and fairly testing using the new system and the changes which have affected us through Covid. So in support of the GSA team’s endeavours during Covid, breaking the stranglehold of the legacy clubs and favoured tee times, also giving us the ability to play seven courses for one fee, a fully online booking system, a new golf club that we can subscribe to and gain SGU status, you should be applauded, well done folks.

Bob Shields really needs to clean his optics and take a more balanced view.

Best regards, John Holland
