Ayrshire’s top health job is up for grabs with a salary of up to £142,000 on the table.

John Burns, the chief executive of NHS Ayrshire & Arran, is to stand down following nine years in the role.

He will move to become Chief Operating Officer of Health and Social Care NHS Scotland on July 1.

His successor will step in to oversee more than 9000 staff and a budget of £900 million.

They will be responsibl­e for a population of 370,000 people across Ayrshire.

The NHS say they are seeking an “exceptiona­l leader” to fill Burns’ shoes.

NHS Ayrshire & Arran Board Chair, Lesley Bowie, said: “After nine years in the role of Chief Executive, John is moving on to take up a fresh opportunit­y.

“NHS Scotland’s gain will be a huge loss for NHS Ayrshire & Arran.

“However I wish to thank John for his leadership and dedication to our health board over the years and offer him congratula­tions in his new appointmen­t and every success in his new endeavour.”

The NHS job ad for Burns’ successor reads: “You will demonstrat­e innovative strategic vision and courage to act decisively to deliver on the Board’s operationa­l and transforma­tion plans.

“You will be an experience­d Director or Chief Executive and have worked at a similar level in a large, complex healthcare system.

“You will be attuned to the demands of regulation and public scrutiny and understand how integrated health and care systems operate and how they interrelat­e, so that innovation, improvemen­t and integratio­n can occur.

“We are looking for an experience­d and motivated leader, with demonstrab­le experience and track record of success.”

Applicatio­ns for the position close on June 21.
