Hero lifeboat crew member’s bike stolen

- RYAN THOM

A hero lifeboat crew member had his bike stolen while dealing with an emergency call.

Evan Gallacher, 50, was prepping to launch the rescue boat at Troon RNLI when his bike was snatched from the car park near to the town’s harbour.

The station mechanic was called to action as crews were paged about an incident on Tuesday, June 1.

But when he returned from duty, he was shocked to find his bike missing from the back of his pick-up truck.

The dad-of-three says the theft has put the dedicated volunteers on ‘high alert’ at the station.

Evan said: “On Tuesday night, the pagers went off. When they go, all I’m thinking about is getting that boat to sea. I came back in later on and found the bike was missing.”

For Evan, cycling provides a break away from the intensity of the station in between calls.

He added: “I was gutted as I enjoy a cycle to keep myself going when I’m down here. “Sometimes I can be down here for a full day and I cycle close by so I’m never too far away. It’s not only me. There are a few of us who have bikes down here, we are all a bit worried now.”

Police have confirmed they are probing the theft of the bike.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “We are investigating the theft of a bike from outside the RNLI Station on Harbour Road on Tuesday, 1 June. The bike was stolen between 7.30pm and 9.20pm and is a graphite grey Btwin Rockrider. “

Those who have information can contact police on 101, quoting UD00770621.
