Sloan’s men sweat it out as Talbot return

- COLIN PATERSON

Tommy Sloan admitted perspiration rather than pretty play was the order of the day as Auchinleck Talbot played their first match in over a year.

The Beechwood boss declared himself satisfied with his side’s work on Saturday afternoon after they were held to a 1-1 draw by West of Scotland League rivals Kello Rovers at Nithside Park.

Ally Smith’s own goal put‘Bot in front but Mark Armour netted a penalty equaliser for the Kirkconnel side on the stroke of half-time.

It was a first game back with fans for Kello while Sloan watched his team come out of hibernation following their decision to sit out last term which ended null and void anyway.

He said:“It was a good, competitive game.

“In the second half we got stronger but couldn’t get the ball in the net for the winner.

“I’m delighted overall and it was good to blow the cobwebs away.

“I think both teams can take quite a bit out of it.

“It was our first game for more than a year. I told the boys I wasn’t looking for any pretty stuff, not that I ever do!

“You are never pleased when you don’t win but there are a few plusses to take out of it.”

The build up to the game had been overshadowed a little by concerns that the 250 capacity would be tested should Talbot fans travel along the A76 in huge numbers.

In the end, only those with a DG postcode were encouraged to attend – although you could see a few visitors who decided Dumfries & Galloway Council had annexed Auchinleck for the day.

There was a relaxed atmosphere off the pitch but it was played like a cup-tie on it with Kello turning in an excellent performance against their illustrious visitors.

Talbot had much of the play and the better of the chances in the second half but Kello’s fitness and spirit caught the eye and they more than deserved a draw.

But in truth, the scoreline didn’t matter. This was a day to celebrate the game coming back, the fans’return and the ties that bind.
