I’m fed-up living in an area that is left as a tip

Charity retail boss calls for action to tackle rubbish problem

- RYAN THOM

A charity shop worker has been left incensed along with neighbours in Ayr flats as their bins area has become a ‘dumping ground’.

Caren Bunyan is demanding more appropriate facilities for her and residents’ household waste that has become overwhelmed with rubbish forcing voluntary clean-ups.

Images have revealed the shocking state of the outside communal area with rubbish left strewn across the ground and bins spilling over.

Caren has been calling for action and is asking for the council to make the area in the town’s Mill Wynd more secure for residents.

The 34-year-old, who stays in the flat with her fiance, has been left dismayed to find cans of Dragon Soop, used nappies and even bags of cement dumped into the large Euro bins placed by South Ayrshire Council.

She said: “This has been going on for quite some time. The amount of times we have complained and tried to get something done and they don’t do anything.

“It wasn’t recycling that was a big problem but now these Euro bins are just becoming a dumping ground for other people.

“Our bins were always overflowing.

“We only get the black ones emptied once every three weeks; that isn’t enough.

“Because it’s right in the middle of the town, we get a lot of people dumping stuff. The mess isn’t even

attributed to anyone in our block.

“I’ve found a lot of drink, there’s a lot of youngsters who walk by this way and they just dump their mess at the back of our flats.

“I’ve also found dirty nappies,

I have no idea who they could be because no one in the block has got a young child or a young child who comes to visit.

“There have also been local businesses who I have caught dumping in our bins.”

Caren, who is a retail manager at Cancer Research, wants the bins to come with locks to prevent them from being used by non-residents.

Neighbours are tidying up the mess with Caren making a nasty discovery of maggots on one of her clean-ups.

She added: “We have all been taking our turn picking up other people’s mess.

“Anyone can access the bins and they are barely big enough to do one flat, never mind the general public. We really need more help from the council, it is so frustrating. I’ve found maggots a few weeks ago and we are really worried that rats could be next with it being so close to the river.”

A council spokesperson said: “We have installed a number of different types of bin at this location and we continue to monitor the situation

“The area will be cleared and a fixed penalty notice will be issued to anyone found dumping rubbish.”
