Ayr set to unveil new manager

- STUART WILSON

Graeme Mathie says Ayr United’s ambitious vision will help to land their next boss.

The Honest Men hope to unveil their chosen candidate in time for Saturday’s visit of table topping Arbroath.

And managing director Mathie believes the club’s progressive new attitude off the park has helped them bring exciting names to the table.

He told the Post: “Everyone we’ve spoken to has bought into the synergy that now exists here.

“I think when they speak to the likes of myself and the chairman, they have confidence that this is a club building for the long term.

“Too often in football these days, you lose a few games and the knives are out.

“So it has been a breath of fresh air to work with the board here over the last few weeks and see their approach to how this club moves forward.

“And I think the people we’ve been speaking to have been struck by that.”

Ayr are in advanced talks with their top target and hope to have him bagged in time to welcome Dick Campbell and the Lichties.

Mathie said: “Everyone we’ve spoken to brings the key aspects of leadership and the ability to improve players, which is what we want first and foremost.

“Ayr United remains an exciting and attractive job and that has shone through during this process.”

Should Ayr’s man not be in place by the weekend, caretaker Davie White will bid to extend his unbeaten run in the dugout.

But he will have to contend with a striking crisis as Tomi Adeloye misses out through suspension, while Jonathan Afolabi is in Covid isolation.

Meanwhile, Mathie insists that Ayr have begun targeting new players for the January window.

He said: “This month always throws up a few surprises but ideally we’d look to bring in two or three.

“The new head coach will obviously play a key role in that.”
