New PM won’t fix broken system

-

It’s been an eventful month at Westminster with Boris Johnson finally succumbing to the inevitable and stepping down as Tory Leader.

What started as a trickle soon developed into a tidal wave of resignations from Government Ministers and aides, including some of his closest allies, until he was effectively isolated.

As I write, however, he is still planning to stay in Office as Prime Minister until the autumn, clearly hoping to use the summer to salvage some sort of better reputation but, already, he has not attended Cobra meetings on the cost-of-living crisis and the extreme heat.

While his removal may be welcome, there isn’t going to be any marked change with who comes next as the two remaining candidates intend to follow the same calamitous policies, which have led to the worst cost-of -living crisis since the 1970s and the highest rate of inflation for 40 years.

A new face certainly won’t change the broken system that is Westminster nor the fact that Scotland will still be subjected to the disastrous decisions of UK Governments that we didn’t vote for.

With schools out for the summer, it was welcome news to see South Ayrshire, again, top of the table for pupils who go on to positive destinations after leaving school.

At 97.6 per cent , this is more than 4 percentage points higher than the Scottish national average of 93.2 per cent and is testament to the work carried out by teachers and pupils in partnership with others, including Skills Development Scotland.

To mark this year’s Carer’s Day, I was honoured to officially open Prestwick Carer’s Day as it returned after the pandemic. Based on the theme of a Jubilee‘Street Party’, it was great to get a chance to speak to so many organisations involved in providing care, supporting family carers or making our communities more welcoming and inclusive.

There was no shortage of homebaking, tea and chat, and I would like to say a big well done to the pupils of Prestwick Academy for hosting the event and entertaining all the visitors so well.
