United aim to finally hit the goal trail
Lee Bullen is backing Ayr United to deliver a big statement – once they find the way to goal.
The Honest Men won plenty of plaudits but had to settle for a point in Saturday’s opening day Championship draw with Arbroath. Now they head for big spending Queen’s Park on Friday night as the ambitious Spiders prepare to lay their own trap. With only one goal scored in five games, Bullen knows where Ayr’s problems lie – but is taking plenty of confidence from performances.
He told the Post: “Saturday has given me lots to work with and anyone who was there saw how well we played. “The goals are going to come. “We are playing a positive brand of attacking football and creating plenty of chances.
“We know we should have won the game on Saturday but, play like that moving forward, and we’ll do just fine.”
The visit to Queen’s Park has been shifted to Friday night due to the Spiders’ groundsharing deal with Stenhousemuir.
Ochilview is already booked out on Saturday by East of Scotland League side, Syngenta FC, who also have a ground sharing agreement in place.
Bullen said: “Owen Coyle is an experienced manager who will have high expectations this season.
“They’ve gone up to Inverness and got a point, which shows they are going to compete this season.”
United continue to await the green light for summer signing, David Bangala, whose visa clearance has taken longer than anticipated.
Managing director, Graeme Mathie, said: “There have been many stages at play throughout the process, which have taken longer than we’d have liked.
“It would be fair to say we’ve also taken our own learnings for next time we go through such an application.
“But in terms of David, we’re hopeful we should receive positive news this week.”
Ayr continue to scour the market for a new frontman and have been linked to talks with former Aberdeen frontman Adam Rooney, although the Post understands such a move is unlikely at this stage.
Mathie added: “We’ve spoken to a number of ambitious targets over the summer and continue to look for the right one to add to the group.”
