New era at Astoria cinema is welcome boost for town
With spring finally here, we’re pushing forward with our regeneration plans for Ayr.
We’ve agreed the Ayr Town Centre Framework, which aims to transform the heart of the town over the next 10 years.
Plans include a new Ayr Station and Transport Interchange along with the development of the Kyle Quarter.
Another objective is to improve Burns Statue Square, which is sure to benefit from the reopening of the former Odeon, now known as The Astoria, by Merlin Cinemas.
We’re also spending over £400k on ‘early win’ projects to help boost the town, these include additional funding to help deliver more events at the CuttySark and the Grain Exchange.
With events in mind, I am delighted that we have been able to secure the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight for The International Ayr Show – Festival of Flight! The Hurricane, Spitfire and Lancaster aircraft will grace the skies above the Low Green this September. You can keep up to date with event progress at www.ayrshow.co.uk
Another huge event taking place this year, is The 152nd Open at Royal Troon. With residents in and around Troon looking to let out their homes for the Championship running 14-21
July, we’re reminding them about the new Scottish legislation that requires short-term lets to be licenced.
Wallacetown will be hosting a free to attend event this April. The Wallacetown Community Arts Festival will include film screenings,

art exhibitions, music events, a history walk and much more. The festival starts on Mon 15 April, with the ‘grand finale’ taking place at Somerset Park in Ayr on Saturday, April 20 from 12pm until 3pm; it promises to be a cracker!
Keeping our streets clean is something we should all be involved in. As part of a wider partnership with Keep Scotland Beautiful and LitterLotto, we’ve launched an innovative LitterLotto League competition in schools to encourage pupils to bin their waste.
Finally, our new net-zero building at Bridge Street Depot in Girvan has been shortlisted for a RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) regional award. This is a great achievement for the category A+ energy performing building.
