‘TOO CLOSE TO SCHOOL’

Fears on traveller site

-

A temporary gypsy site could be placed metres from a primary school.

Anglesey Council is looking at five possible sites for gypsies and travellers - with proposals out for public consultation.

Assessments by the authority have shown two temporary stopping places are needed on Anglesey - one in the centre of the island and one in the Holyhead area.

One of the sites is just south of Ysgol Kingsland in Holyhead.

A nearby resident, who did not wish to be named, said the council was “appearing to conduct this matter at minimum publicity level”.

Another said: “I do not think it’s appropriate to be next to a school at all. To be frank, I can’t believe they would even consider it. I understand the need for a temporary site but surely one so close is out of the question. It’s only over the road from Ysgol Morswyn as well.

The mum-of-two added: “There simply must be other sites which are more suitable.”

Five sites along the A5/ A55 corridor have been short-listed.

Site 1 - Strip of land between A55/A5 between Llanfairpwll and Star Crossroads

Site 2 - Parcel of land at Gaerwen smallholding

Site 3 - Land adjacent to the A5 near Cymunod Farm, Bryngwran

Site 4 - Land at former farm, off Cyttir Road Holyhead (South of Kingsland School)

Site 5 - Land at Tyddyn Lantern Farm, Holyhead.

Dr Gwynne Jones, Anglesey Council chief executive, said: “Over recent months, we’ve been working to identify possible sites on the island.

“Dealing with gypsy and traveller sites is always going to be a controversial and sensitive issue, but it is one which the county council must address.”

A permanent site was agreed last month on council-owned land near Penmynydd. Anglesey Council will now submit a planning application for the site.
