Urgent safety calls after A5 crash:

- Gareth Wyn Williams

URGENT safety measures were demanded at the scene of a serious crash on Anglesey that left a child airlifted to hospital.

Councillor Bob Parry called for action as he spoke of the community’s shock following Friday evening’s two-vehicle smash on the A5 at Bryngwran, Anglesey.

Emergency services were called to Bryngwran shortly before 6pm on Friday following the incident on the A5 which runs through the village.

A child was airlifted to the trauma centre at the Royal Stoke University Hospital with ‘serious’ injuries. A woman in her 30s was taken by ambulance to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor also with serious injuries.

The A5 was shut in both directions for more than five hours while fire crews cut out the casualties.

Police yesterday urged witnesses to come forward.

Cllr Parry, who has represented Bryngwran for over 30 years, said: “The whole village has been shocked by the accident, and the thoughts of the entire community are with the friends and families of those involved.

“We can only hope that any updates on their condition are positive ones.

“But I feel that traffic calming measure are long overdue in the village, and despite the A55 having been built over ten years ago, we still see a lot of traffic in the village.

“Although we don’t know the circumstances behind Friday’s accident and whether speed was a factor or not, it’s a sad fact that too many cars hurtle through the village unchallenged.”

Over the past decade at least eight accidents have been reported on the stretch of the A5 at Bryngwran, between Dalar and Treban.

Cllr Parry added: “Sadly, the Arrive Alive vans aren’t here often enough and nor do we even have flashing matrix signs on either side of the village warning motorists of the 30mph limit.

“I was afraid that something like this would happen sooner or later, and have mentioned it on several occasions. It’s vital that action is taken as soon as possible.”

An eyewitness at the scene, said: “A car appeared to have crashed into a wall.

“I saw two air ambulances arrive and the road was completely blocked. There were quite a lot of people standing around watching what was going on.”

Fire crews from Holyhead and Llangefni with specialist cutting equipment were called to cut the roof off one of the cars, with specialist hydraulic jacks used to help free a woman from the vehicle.

North Wales Police launched an appeal for any witnesses to the incident to come forward by calling the force on 101, quoting reference number U100196.
