CITY GET A LEGG UP!

BCFC new boss

-

BANGOR City have appointed former Wales international Andy Legg as their new manager.

Neath-born Legg played more than 700 competitive games in a 17-year Football League career which took in a number of clubs including Swansea City, Cardiff City, Birmingham City and Peterborough United.

At Bangor, Legg replaces Neville Powell, who was sacked last week after nine years at the helm.

Legg said: “For me, Bangor City FC is the biggest club in the Welsh Premier League and enjoys the best support.

“There was only one team that would bring me back to the WPL and that’s Bangor City. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

Legg was briefly in charge of Hucknall Town before taking over as player-manager of Welsh Premier League club Llanelli in 2009.

Under his leadership, the South Wales Reds won the Welsh Cup for the first time in their history in 2011, beating Bangor City in the final, and enjoyed success in Europe.

Meanwhile, Bangor City will pay tribute to a club great this weekend.

Ten years after Sion Edwards joined the Citizens, his testimonial match takes place at the Bangor University Stadium on Saturday.

The current Bangor side will meet the Welsh Premier championshipwinning City team of 2010/11, kickoff 4pm.

Bangor lad Edwards, 29, developed through the Penrhosgarnedd youth system before joining Wrexham. The flying winger was released by the Dragons and signed for the Citizens in 2006.

Since then, he has made a total of 223 (plus 78 substitute) appearances in the Welsh Premier (a club record), netting 57 goals in total.

A vital part of the WPL title-winners of 2010/11, Edwards has also appeared in five Welsh Cup finals for City including the three successive wins in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

At Saturday’s game – for which admission is £5 for adults and £2 OAPs and children – a raffle will be held with proceeds going to Parkinson’s UK and Cancer Research UK.

A huge amount of prizes will be on offer, with tickets available from the bar in The Farrar Suite and the One Stop store in Penrhosgarnedd.

Thanks to the FA of Wales a special match ball, signed by the entire Wales squad prior to their departure for the Euro 2016 tournament in France, which will be auctioned after the match.

The auction will be hosted by club sponsor Dafydd Hardy.
