Parking meter plan refused by members

-

PROPOSALS to install a parking meter at a popular Anglesey beach have been put on hold after being refused by council planners.

The Bodorgan Estate had submitted a plan to install pay and display machines at both Cable Bay and Broad Beach (or Porth Nobla), Rhosneigr.

But despite the Broad Beach application receiving the necessary backing, similar plans for a machine at Cable Bay will be discussed again in a month as members went against officers’ recommendations.

According to the Bodorgan Estate, income from both machines would be reinvested into the available facilities.

But concerns that some tourists and locals would try to park on the side of the busy A4080 to avoid paying charges, sparked fears by some councillors.

During Wednesday’s Planning Committee meeting in Llangefni, both Cllrs Ann Griffith and Richard Dew expressed opposition to the bid.

But fellow local member, Cllr Peter Rogers praised the Bodorgan Estate for being ‘ sympathetic landowners who served the area well’, and that the objections were ‘not valid’ for an application to install a parking meter.

But despite highways officers revealing that yellow lines could be brought in to stop parking on the highway, Cllr Ken Hughes’ motion that the Cable Bay application be rejected was passed by three votes to two.
