Llangefni turn focus to Trophy after cup win

-

LLANGEFNI Town host Meliden in the FAW Trophy third round this Saturday no doubt boosted by last weekend’s 4-1 Cookson Cup thrashing of Llandyrnog United at Lôn Talwrn.

Llangefni created their first chance with only a minute and a half on the clock, some great one-touch football seeing James Saxon get on the ball on the edge of the penalty area to unleash a fierce strike which forced a great save from the ‘Dyrnog keeper.

Cefni were in complete control and playing some great football.

Shots from Steve Kehoe and Iwan Jones fizzed over the bar, and some great deliveries into the box just could not be converted as the away keeper pulled off some fantastic saves.

However, in the 19th minute Paul Rowlands delivered a great cross from the right which was looking like reaching Iwan Jones at the back post, only for a Llandyrnog defender to put it into his own net .

Most of the play was in the ‘Dyrnog half and they were finding it hard to get out as Cefni kept them pinned back.

Anthony Hughes went close as he was played in one-on-one but was denied by another top save.

Craig Roberts pounced on a long ball and knocked it past the out-rushing keeper only for him to be brought down in the box, but no penalty was awarded and it remained 1-0 at half time.

Llandyrnog started the second half brightly and were level on 51 minutes when Dan Porter converted a fine free kick.

This got Cefni going again and they were back in front within three minutes of conceding.

Jack Williams whipped in the ball from the left for Craig Roberts to get on the end of it and finish with a thunderous header.

Town once again had found their rhythm and were passing the ball around with ease.

Rowlands picked out Iwan Jones at the back stick, where he nodded the ball down to the unmarked Craig Roberts to volley in for his second of the match.

Iwan Jones completed the scoring on 65 minutes with a low strike into the bottom corner.

Llangefni were still pressing for more goals at this stage and also had a second penalty shout denied.

A great run from Matthew Jones saw his shot go over the bar, and also Iwan Jones once again fired wide.

It was a comfortable win in the end for the hosts against a side who only the previous weekend ended the 100 per cent record of Welsh Alliance Division One champions Trearddur Bay United by beating them 2-1.

Llangefni are in fine form at the moment, unbeaten in their last sixmatches, having scored 23 goals and only conceded two.

Their FAW Trophy opponents Meliden play in Division Two but are a useful side, having beaten cup giantkillers Mynydd Llandegai last weekend.
