8-goal thriller as leaders Llangoed are held by Town

- By Dave McCann

THE Kon-X Anglesey League may be on the bottom rung of the Welsh football pyramid, but it often produces some of the most thrillng games on the North Wales soccer scene.

And that was certainly the case last Saturday as leaders Llangoed and District were held to a 4-4 draw by undefeated Holyhead Town.

The game was a classic, fully justifying its top billing.

Watching Anglesey League chairman Dennis Bryant said: “It’s one of the best games I’ve seen on the island.

“Two excellent teams and a game well officiated by Stephen Jones of Bethesda.

“The match was a credit, not just to football on Anglesey, but to football in North Wales.”

Llangoed were looking for a good start against a team with two games in hand on them, and they got it when Craig Jones met a Carwyn Williams cross to head home.

They doubled the score as Mitchell Jones broke clear to run on and fire home, and the hosts led two-nil at the break.

If that seemed a comfortable lead it was far from it, as home keeper Rhys Owen pulled off four outstanding saves in that first half.

One saw him stretch full-length to keep out a thunderous Tom Hadley free kick going in at the foot of the far post.

Then, from a corner, he risked a boot in the face as he plucked the ball off the foot of Mathew Thomas.

The second period saw Town deservedly pull one back through Hadley, and with Jackie Welsh and Tom Roberts beginning to pull the strings in midfield it was game on - or so everyone thought.

However, the influential Carwyn Williams struck a left-foot drive into the net to regain Llangoed’s two-goal advantage.

Holyhead brushed the setback to one side and were soon level at 3-3 with goals from Mathew Thomas and inspirational captain Tom Roberts.

Yet again Llangoed regained the lead, Craig Jones with his second, but yet again Holyhead responded and Sean Davies made it all-square at four apiece.

Even then in the short time remaining, either side could have won this barnstorming clash.

Craig Jones in a one-on-one with the keeper could have made it a hat-trick and a winner, but narrowly failed, and just after Hadley had the chance to snatch three points for the visitors, but fired just over.

The day’s only other league tussle saw Mynydd Llandegai Reserves triumph 5-1 at Pentraeth Reserves.

Liam Owen was the travellers’ hero with a treble, while Wyn Morris and Iwan Morris were also on target.

Other Anglesey clubs were involved in the NWCFA Junior Cup Pic: DAVE McCANN first round. Valley were victorious 5-3 at Bethesda Athletic Reserves, Tommy Jenkins and Jerome Sillence netting two apiece and Ashley Hughes adding a single.

Bodorgan advanced to the next stage with a 6-3 verdict over Cymru Hotspur of the Vale of Clwyd and Conwy League.

Elliot Patterson was the star turn for the Anglesey League side with a hat-trick, Luke Allaway adding a pair while Steven Jemma made up the half dozen.

Beaumaris Town went down 3-2 at Rhyl Town, Daniel Camilleri and Huw Pritchard for the visitors.
