Llanelli next for the rampant RGC squad

-

RGC will host one of Wales’ most famous clubs this Saturday when 14-time Welsh Cup winners Llanelli visit Parc Eirias (12 noon kick-off ).

The third-place Gogs aim to make it seven wins in eight starts in the Principality Premiership at the expense of the Turks, currently down in 12th.

RGC’s remarkable start to their firstever Premiership season scaled new heights last weekend when they dished out a 56-3 spanking to a Bargoed outfit which finished above the North Walians in the Swalec Championship last season.

The visitors landed an early penalty through Callum Jones but from that point onwards RGC dominated.

Bargoed’s defence initially proved a tough nut to crack and it was the boot of Jacob Botica that got the first points on the board with three penalties.

The try eventually came after an overthrow from the lineout. Centre Tiaan Loots got a boot to the ball and as he chased it down he was pulled back and the referee awarded a penalty try. Botica added the conversion.

Not only did the home side now lead 16-3, they had a man advantage as away scrum-half James Pizey was yellow carded.

Four minutes later RGC scored another try when Botica and Rhys Williams combined before setting up Loots to run down the pitch to ground. Botica’s boot extended the lead.

Bargoed pushed for a score to get them back in the game but the RGC defence was holding firm and it was 23-3 at the turnaround.

As expected Bargoed came out in the second half asking some questions but once again the RGC line was looking strong with plenty of tackles ending any attacks.

Both sides were reduced to 14 men when Will Bryan and Greg Carlow were sent to the sin-bin, and the extra pitch space clearly helped RGC.

The hosts were soon in the tries again as a Loots reverse pass set up Botica to touch down and convert.

Afon Bagshaw collected the ball and started the move that led to try number four. The ball was given to Sam Jones and the winger showed his frightening pace down the line before setting up Loots to score. Botica added another conversion.

That score started a breath-taking period as Sam Jones once again ghosted past the defence before shifting the ball to Rhys Williams whose big looping pass enabled Alex Schwarz to dot down.

Botica continued his 100 per cent kicking with the extras before leaving the pitch at 44-3 to a standing ovation after chalking up 24 points..

The RGC scrum was also impressive, and the pack dominated the arm wrestle throughout the 80 minutes.

It was pretty apt that the back-line delivered some tricks and plenty of treats for the Eirias crowd with two more tries, when Aaron Evans scored his first for RGC with a Bagshaw conversion and then the full-back scored himself to round off a superb attacking game of rugby.
