CYCLING GURUS VISIT

BEAUTIFUL BEACH WAS LEFT STREWN WITH DEBRIS SAY WALKERS

- Ben Butler

THESE images show the unsightly mess left on a popular Anglesey beach following a bonfire.

The discovery was made by Mel and Paula Jones while they were walking on Porth Tywyn Mawr Beach (Sandy Beach) in Llanfachraeth near Holyhead on Sunday October 30.

Pictures show pieces of wood and other bits of debris strewn across the beauty spot.

The couple, who say the mess had come from two local campsites who had arranged the bonfire said the debris left was a “potential health hazard” and “detracted from the beauty of the area.”

But Penrhyn Bay Caravan Park say the debris from the bonfire was cleared using machinery early on Sunday morning and that they had organised the bonfire with Sandy Beach Leisure Park to raise money for local charities.

Mel and Paula said after discovering the debris: “Children, dogs and horses go to this beach on a daily basis - it is very popular with locals and visitors alike.

“If a nail had gone into a child’s foot, it could have caused serious damage.

“The debris is a potential health hazard and detracts from the beauty of the area.”

The couple say Mel reported the matter to the two campsites and also to Natural Resources Wales.

They added: “We are all for people having fun, enjoying our beautiful coastline and coming together to raise money for local charities.

“However, shouldn’t the area be cleaned up afterwards?”

A spokesperson for Penryhn Bay Caravan Park said: “The bonfire was organised by ourselves and Sandy Beach Leisure Park to raise money for local charities including Hope House Hospice.

“The fire burnt until tht tide came in.

“Then early on Sunday morning, the machines were sent afterwards to clear the mess.

“As far as I know, only timber was burnt in the bonfire.”

Huw Jones, Gwynedd and Anglesey Team Leader, Natural Resources Wales, said they are investigating the materials burnt.

Mr Jones said: “Over the weekend, we were informed that bonfire debris was littering Porth Tywyn Mawr beach on Anglesey. We have passed on the details to Anglesey County Council and we are still investigating the materials burnt.”

“Guy Fawkes bonfires need to be held in a way that maintains the spirit of the event whilst minimising the impact on the environment.”

Sandy Beach Leisure Park have been approached for comment.
