Cycling legend in rally team for remembrance event at Anglesey circuit
OLYMPIC and Paralympic heroes will put pedal to the metal at a North Wales circuit during a weekend of motor racing to honour the sacrifices made by the armed services on active duty.
The inaugural Race of Remembrance was staged at Anglesey’s Trac Môn in 2014, bringing together racing drivers, engineers, mechanics, photographers and fans to raise money and awareness of servicemen and women affected by war.
More than 40 wounded veterans will participate in this year’s event on Remembrance weekend.
Sir Chris Hoy, an 11-time world champion and six-time Olympic cycling champion, will swap his usual two wheels for four during the event on Anglesey.
The athlete is no stranger to motorsport - he competed in this year’s Le Mans 24 hour race and finished 17th.
He will team up with Jon Allan Butterworth, the most successful paralympian to have suffered injuries in battle.
He took three silvers at London 2012 and gold in Rio over the summer. Driving a Milltek Sport Volkswagen Golf, they will join professional driver Tom Onslow-Cole and British businessman Paul White, who’s funding the car and taking part. The Race of Remembrance is organised by Mission Motorsport, a charity who offer rehabilitation and training to injured soldiers through motor racing. Qualifying will start on Friday, November 11, while the following morning’s Supercar Saturday will see a range of cars for people to buy passenger rides in. The main event, starting in the afternoon and continuing into Sunday, will see 45 teams will embark on a 1,000km endurance race with over 150 drivers competing either by relay style, or by racing a single endurance car for the Heroes Trophy. Andrew Mon Hughes of Ty Croes’ Trac Môn, said: “It’s a great honour to pay tribute to such a worthy cause and we’re expecting between 1,500 and 2,000 people over the weekend, which also boosts the local economy of course. “To see legends such as Sir Chris Hoy taking part, is just the icing on the cake.” For more details, visit www. raceofremembrance.com
