Club thanks to ‘Spo’ for 60 years of help

-

WHEN it comes to supporting your local football club through thick and thin Owen “Spo” Williams can have few equals.

Spo recently celebrated his 70th birthday and 60 of those years have been spent as an ardent fan of Llangoed and District FC.

He first became involved with the Anglesey League club as a nine-yearold in 1956.

Although he has never played for Llangoed, current chairman Spo has always been a man involved in helping with the running of the club.

He is a true unsung hero of North Wales football and the game simply could not survive without the likes of Spo.

Llangoed’s current manager Vinny Walker said: “Without him Llangoed would not be a club today.

“He’s always marking the pitch, putting nets up, cleaning kits and changing rooms; he’s basically an unsung hero for the club who very rarely gets noticed or praised for the thankless work he does at the club.

“To show the type of man Spo is, he asked everyone not to give presents for his birthday.

“He wanted money so he can donate it to charity because he says he has everything he needs – health, family and friends.

“We have now given the name to the canteen and changing room area the Owen Williams Clubhouse as a sign of respect for a really special man.”

The club gave a special mention to Inigo Jones for supplying the plaque and GW Roberts Construction for putting it up free of charge.

It was unfortunate that Llangoed’s scheduled home game with Valley last Saturday was postponed by the FAW due to it being an internationals weekend, as a surprise unveiling of the plaque was planned, but the event went ahead anyway.

Anglesey League secretary Dave McCann said: “It was an excellent gesture by the club to try and show just how much they appreciate all he has done for them and in my opinion Spo fully deserves the recognition.

“I echo everything they say about him but would just like to add that he is not just an Llangoed and District man, but a football man.

“When the league’s cup finals are played, regardless of Llangoed being involved or not, he will be there.

“In the 13 years – or more – that I have been an officer of the league, there is only a couple of times I can remember not seeing him there. “In football, people come and go. “Some are in it for what they can get out of it. Not Spo. He is a “stayer”, he’s been committed through good times or bad.

“In the 60 years since Spo joined the club, Llangoed have been champions twice and runners-up three times.

“In the Dargie Cup they have twice been winners and runners-up and have twice boasted the Player of the Season and the league’s top scorer.”

And more glory could be on the way for impressive Llangoed this season.
