Cemaes lose out in eight-goal cracker

-

CEMAES Bay were beaten 5-3 in a highly entertaining Mawddach Challenge Cup tie at home to Llanllyfni at School Lane last Saturday, reports Edryd Jones.

Bay had lost 4-0 at ‘Llyfni in a Welsh Alliance Division Two tussle just a fortnight earlier, so the Anglesey side were on a revenge mission.

In the opening exchanges it looked as though the Bay may be shaping up nicely to do just that, with forward Tom Wood having much joy down the left wing.

It was within the first five minutes where the referee had a big call to make as Wood, bearing down on goal, was tackled in a manner which the home crowd thought would lead to a sending off, but Llanllyfni breathed a sigh of relief as their defender did not even find himself cautioned.

Cemaes were far improved from the last encounter and in the first 20 minutes looked most likely to score.

However, in the 22nd minute Llanllyfni broke the deadlock when Iwan Morris headed in from a corner.

On the half-hour Morris struck again in a carbon copy of the first. It was soon three goals in 15 minutes for Llanllyfni as the ball dropped to Sion Hughes, whose first-time shot found its way to the back of the net through a crowded box.

Cemaes had a glimmer of hope on the stroke of half time, making it 3-1 as Matthew O’Hara’s perfectly placed cross found the head of Bay talisman Steven Whittaker, who powered it into I was going to write about how weird it is to watch a team you see every week play a match on television.

Bay looked to build on that goal after the restart, but in the 51st minute Llanllyfni made it 4-1 through a setpiece turned in by Morris, securing his hat-trick in a man of the match display.

The visitors could have found themselves further ahead if it had not been for Lewis Connor’s last-ditch defend- Undoubtedly by the time you read this you will know what’s happening. To double check the transport situation phone Einion on 07969 461036.

Come the 71st minute Cemaes replied with a beautifully worked goal from Wood, who finished low to the keeper’s right.

Any hope of a home comeback was extinguished as after an initial block in a one-versus-one situation, Bay’s keeper brought the Llanllyfni player down conceding a penalty, which was

Things went from bad to worse as Bay substitute Chris Hughes was given his marching orders for a second yellow card of the afternoon for dissent.

There was still time for Cemaes to grab another through Matthew Shakespeare in the 93rd minute, rounding off a highly entertaining cup match finishing 5-3 to Llanllyfni.
