Bodedern return to Gwynedd pinnacle

-

BODEDERN Athletic returned to the Gwynedd League summit with a 3-1 home win over Bro Goronwy.

Immediately from the outset Athletic were in the driving seat, opening the scoring in only the second minute from their first attack.

Ryan Taylor’s wicked cross was met sweet as a nut by Dan Owen’s volley to send the ball soaring into the top corner of the net.

Recent signing Craig Moore looked dangerous for the home side, cutting in from his right-wing berth to cause regular trouble, first slotting a shot wide and then forcing Jonny Sweetser-Hawkes to push away his low strike.

Bro’s Dan Fairhead accelerated away on a run but from this Bodedern struck again on the break, Mathew Jones side-footing home for 2-0 and his 30th goal of the campaign.

Goronwy’s Connor Jones and Callum Thomas combined well to try to bring the visitors back into the contest, the latter lifting his shot over the bar.

A change to a back three resulted in Bro looking more lively in possession and attacking pressure and they reduced the deficit on 36 minutes.

Callum Thomas’ quick feet outfoxed a defender before his low shot found the bottom corner of the net for 2-1.

Thomas held his head in his hands after being gifted an excellent oppor- tunity to send his team in level at the break, failing to connect when well placed in front of goal.

The next goal would always be crucial and it was the hosts that furthered their advantage on the stroke of the hour mark.

Taylor wormed his way free on the b line to pick out Shaun Jenkins with a cross to the far post to leave the striker a simple head into the net for 3-1.

Bro youngster Jac Thomas did not get much of a sight on goal all game, his only effort coming late on but he was unable to gain any power into his shot that would have set up a grandstand finish.

Goronwy’s Sion Wyn Griffiths’ looping header came to no avail, landing on the roof of the net.

Boded’s Owen started the afternoon’s scoring and so nearly finished it, pouncing on the break only to watch his curler bounce off the bar. Athletic host Nefyn this Saturday. Only one other Gwynedd League match was played due to the weather, Pic: PAUL SCHOLES Aberffraw romping to an 11-1 victory at Bethesda Athletic.
