POPULAR SEAFOOD FESTIVAL CANCELLED

Lack of volunteers

- Sarah Hodgson

A lack of funding and volunteers means an annual food festival will not go ahead this year.

The Menai Seafood Festival, running for four years, attracts hundreds of people to Menai Bridge in Anglesey each year.

But organisers have posted a statement on its website to say the 2017 event was “suspended”. No date was announced for the event to take place.

A smaller Seafood Slam event may take place but the long-term future of the Menai Seafood Festival looks uncertain.

A statement from the festival committee said: “Unfortunately, due to a lack of funding and of volunteers to help organise Menai Seafood Festival, we regrettably write to inform you that this year’s event has been suspended.

“A smaller scale foodslam-style event (‘Seafood Slam’) is being con- sidered and further information regarding this will be announced by Gorau Mon in coming weeks.

“If further funding becomes available and volunteers come forward to help organise the event, there may be an opportunity for the festival to take place in 2018.

“Anybody interested in putting themselves forward as a volunteer or sponsor should contact us on info@ menaiseafoodfestival.com.”

The event showcases North Wales’ coastal heritage and the area’s seafood, particularly that from around the shores of Angelsey.

In the past, it has featured cooking demonstrations, music and arts and activities for children.

Last year’s event, which took place in August, proved a huge success, with many of the 100 stalls running out of supplies due to hungry visitors.
