Cefni eye place in Trophy final

- by Dave Jones

LLANGEFNI Town will target a place in the FAW Trophy final when they take on Chirk AAA in a much-anticipated last-four tie at the Corbett Sports Stadium, Rhyl, on Saturday (2pm).

The only Anglesey club ever to win this competition, when it was known as the Welsh Intermediate Cup back in 1991/92, Cefni will meet Welsh National League Premier Division opposition for a place in the showpiece occasion.

Chirk have lifted the Trophy three times in their history and were beaten finalists at the hands of Llanrug in 2013/14.

In the other semi, last year’s runners-up and 2011/12 winners Sully Sports, from the Vale of Glamorgan, lock horns with Swansea outfit Penlan Social.

Llangefni and Chirk experienced mixed fortunes in their final tests before the big semi last weekend.

While the Colliers went down 2-1 at home to FC Nomads, Cefni returned to winning ways with a 2-1 league victory over Greenfield.

Beaten the previous weekend in the Mawddach Challenge Cup by Llandyrnog United, Llangefni were back at Coleg Llandrillo, due to their own pitch being unfit, to tackle a Greenfield side which recently enjoyed a shock 1-0 win at leaders Glantraeth.

Cefni’s Ibrahim Fazeel and Steve Kehoe’s long-range efforts went over the bar before Craig Evans gave the hosts the lead on 36 minutes from close range after a good through-ball from Corey Sinnott.

Llangefni doubled their advantage a minute later after Fazeel won the ball with a crunching tackle before playing a great pass to Anthony Hughes, whose shot beat the keeper from a tight angle.

The islanders controlled the second half and had the chances to kill the game off, but Jack Williams and James Saxon’s efforts went wide.

Greenfield pulled a goal back in stoppage time through Mark Johnson, but Town held firm.

This Saturday will see Cefni travel for the first time in the competition – albeit to a neutral venue – having had home ties in all five previous rounds, knocking in 27 goals.
