YELLOW PERIL

Double lines woe

- Eryl Crump

PLANS to extend parking restrictions in a village have angered residents and visitors.

Anglesey council has posted notices in Newborough outlining the proposals to reduce parking time in the main street, putting double yellow lines outside the community hall and selling the only car park in the village.

There are currently only parking restrictions during the summer months, when traffic heading to Llanddwyn island beach is at its peak.

One local said: “It’s going be a hell of an outcome if the lines get the go-ahead and the car park gets sold.

“It will kill the village. It is a bonkers idea by the council.

“They are even planning to put double yellows (lines) outside the community hall – the main user groups being the elderly and disabled and the nearest available parking is a kilometre away.”

Kiteboarding enthusiast Denny Bradley, from York, said: “I visit Aberffraw regularly in the off-peak months and will stop in Newbor- ough to pick up groceries and have a coffee.

“It’s just about doable in 30. But to reduce the time allowed to 20 minutes and put yellow lines banning parking at all times is a crazy idea.”

A council spokesman said: “In response to calls to deal with traffic congestion issues in Newborough, we’re currently consulting on proposals to change the existing seasonal parking restrictions to permanent ones.”

He added: “We also want to increase vehicle turnover and enable a greater chance of finding a parking space by reducing the maximum duration of stay from 30 minutes to 20 minutes.”
