Bro coast into another final

-

BRO Goronwy are on course to mark the 30th anniversary of their sole NWCFA Junior Cup success with a repeat performance after they reached the 2016/17 final in style with a 5-1 away win at Rhyl Town last Saturday.

It was back in 1986/87 that the then Anglesey League outfit lifted the cup for the only time in their history and they now await the winners of this weekend’s semi-final between Llanfairfechan Town and Waunfawr to discover who they meet in the showpiece next month.

Gwynedd League newcomers this season, Bro took on last-four opponents Rhyl of the Vale of Clwyd and Conwy League at Coronation Gardens in what turned out to be a one-sided semi.

Lee Potter’s side led 3-0 after just 15 minutes.

Gareth Owen’s pinpoint deliveries were key to much success for Bro and in the second minute he sent striker Andy Williams in the clear, stopper Ryan Jones intervening only for Callum Thomas to follow up and manoeuvre his body enough to bicycle kick a volley into the net.

Connor Jones soon put through leading marksman Williams to slot home the second.

On the quarter-hour, it was surely game over already in the tie, this time Williams squaring for Taylor Jones to tap in.

Rhyl’s only bright spark was striker Jack Wilkins, who made it 3-1 on 19 minutes.

Bro secured a comfortable half time team talk as a further goal put them firmly in the driving seat.

Again Owen was the playmaker, this time sending Graham Jones in the clear to apply an acute chip over the outrushing glovesman for 4-1.

Rhyl showed more fight in the second period but the damage had already been done as the visitors played out the tie, as well as creating more chances.

Connor Jones controlled and finished well a Taylor Jones whippedin cross at the front post to make it 5-1 on 55 minutes and start the visiting supporters planning a Junior Cup Final day out.

Jac Thomas came off the bench to further worry the home defence only for some lack of finishing to keep the scoreline down, taking too long to make his mind up when in the clear and then forcing keeper Ryan Jones to tip over.

Bro meet Waunfawr tonight (Wednesday, 7pm) in the Cwpan Gwynedd Meditel Final at The Oval, Caernarfon Town FC.
