Residents urged to get out and use vote

-

A unique “Visitor Payback” scheme where customers donate cash to good causes when paying their bill, has been pioneered by an Anglesey hotel to boost red squirrel numbers.

The Bulkeley Hotel in Beaumaris has chosen to support the uniquely successful work of Red Squirrel conservation carried out by Red Squirrels Trust Wales.

Martin Owen, the Manager of Bulkeley Hotel has been a staunch supporter of the red squirrel project on Anglesey, which was set up some 20 years ago to save and reverse the decline of the remaining population of 40 or so red squirrels in Pentraeth woods that were on the brink of extinction. A DAY before islanders go to the polls, residents are being urged to have their say.

According to returning officer and council chief executive, Dr Gwynne Jones, islanders need to play their part in electing a new county council.

Elections will be held in all 11 multi-member wards, with 65 candidates vying for 30 seats.

Dr Jones stressed, “Each of the wards will be keenly contested and it’s vital the electorate play their part by casting their votes on Thursday, May 4.”

If you live in the wards of Aethwy; Caergybi; Canolbarth Môn; Lligwy; Seiriol; Talybolion; Twrcelyn or Ynys Gybi - you can vote for up to three candidates.

If you live in the Bro Aberf-

He remembers growing up in the neighbourhood and seeing only red squirrels as a child and then their rapid decline as grey squirrels took over.

He said: “It is very heartening to see Anglesey made a red squirrel territory again and we are very proud to support this uniquely successful conservation project on our doorstep which will see customers donate £1 from their bill to this good cause.

“The Visitor Payback scheme is a win-win scenario both for tourism and for the good cause of red squirrel conservation”.

Red squirrel numbers on Anglesey are now over 700 and increasing. Red squirrels have also colonised mainland fraw, Bro Rhosyr or Llifon - you can vote for up to two.

Dr Jones added, “I’d remind anyone who has requested a postal vote, but isn’t able to return it before May 4 to take it to our main office in Llangefni or your polling station before 10pm on Election Day.”

There are 40 town and community councils on Anglesey. Seven of these will also be contested on May 4th. They are Amlwch – Rural & Town wards; Holyhead – Porthyfelin & Morawelon wards; Llangefni – Cefni & Cyngar wards; and Llanfaelog – Maelog ward.

Polling stations will open from 7am to 10pm with the votes counted at Plas Arthur, Llangefni from 9am on Friday.

Mrs Raj Jones, the founding chair of Red Squirrels Trust Wales said: “Ours is a community led project and all funds raised through donations are devoted to red squirrel conservation.

“We are extremely grateful for donations from Bulkeley Hotel via their ‘Visitor Payback’ scheme and I do believe that it will benefit tourism by encouraging repeat visits from customers, who will feel like participants in our red squirrel conservation work.” co.uk .
