MORE than 800 woman took part in the Race for Life in Caernarfon on Sunday morning.

Caernarfon Mayor, Cllr Ioan Thomas, started the fun run in aid of a leading cancer charity.

The women, most dressed in pink and some wearing fancy dress, ran, jogged or walked the five kilometre course from Coed Helen along the Foryd foreshore.

Kirsti Thompson, Cancer Research UK’s North Wales and Manchester Event Manager, said: “The atmosphere’s amazing, we’ve got 800 women here all getting ready and warmed up.

“We’re very grateful for the effort everyone has put into this.

“All the money raised will help Cancer Research UK scientists find new ways to treat cancer and save more lives. Every step we take together will help to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.”

She said one in two people in the UK born after 1960 will be diagnosed with some form of cancer during their lifetime.

Malan Wilkinson from Caernarfon completed the run in memory of her mum Sian who died of cancer 15 years ago.

Clocking a very respectable time of 50 minutes for the run Malan said: “Sadly I lost my mother at 17 years of age. She battled cancer three times during my adolesence before brain cancer conquered her.”

Malan hopes her efforts will raise more than £500 for cancer research.
