Bro Goronwy lift Junior Cup

- NWCFA Junior Cup Final

TWO goals in the closing minutes clinched Bro Goronwy a 2-0 victory over Waunfawr which secured the NWCFA Junior Cup.

Lee Potter’s side landed the trophy exactly 30 years since their last success in this competition.

Having not scored in their previous two matches against Waunfawr, Bro knew they would be up against a determined and stubborn outfit but a slight tweak in formation was key in dominating last Saturday’s final at Holyhead Hotspur’s ground.

Switching to a back-three defensive set up allowed Pat Roberts to slot in behind Bro’s strikers and this worked a treat in dictating all the attacking play.

The first half was all Bro on the offensive with nothing to show up until the break.

Jac Thomas was only halted in going clear by defender Tomos Owen’s intervention. Thomas then volleyed straight at stopper Gerallt Bracegirdle before Callum Thomas fired over the crossbar.

Andy Williams was thwarted by the glovesman, with Graham Jones’ towering header bouncing inches wide of the post from the resulting corner.

Nothing changed after the interval, with Bro continuing to control play without finding the net.

Stout defending kept Waunfawr in the match, Adam Jones in the right place to hook another Jones header off the line.

Waunfawr’s only chance on goal came on 80 minutes, Tomos Owen winning his header from a lofted free kick but missing the target.

Jac Thomas fired over, then Con- nor Lewis’ effort from halfway bounced the wrong side of the foot of the post.

Waunfawr’s Chris Harding took a blow to the head off the hard surface and the final was held up awaiting the medical services to assist on 84 minutes.

From the restart, Bro came flying out of the traps, Connor Jones getting bundled over inside the penalty area to give referee Carl Hagan no choice in pointing to the spot.

Man of the match Graham Jones stepped up to slot his right-footed shot into the top corner.

With plenty of stoppage time to play, the final still was not done and dusted until top-scorer Williams sent Bro’s barmy army into raptures.

Jac Thomas found the unmarked striker 10 yards out from goal where his trusted left foot did not let him down, rifling into the corner.
