Llangoed secure the Bwlch Car Boot cup

-

LLANGOED and District finished their season on a high as they secured a second trophy with a 5-2 win over Holyhead Town in the Bwlch Car Boot Trophy Final.

Already winners of the Dargie Cup, Vinny Walker’s side had failed in four previous attempts this term to beat the Harbourmen, who were chasing a four-timer with the Anglesey League title, plus the Lucas Oil and Megan Cups in their grasp.

Before last Friday’s final at Holyhead Hotspur’s ground, there was a minute’s silence as a mark of respect following the tragic events in Manchester on May 22. Members of the Welsh Guards were also in attendance.

Kicking into the sunshine, Town came flying out of the blocks and it took them only three minutes to open the scoring.

A comedy of errors led to Jackie Welsh lobbing the ball over two defenders and oncoming goalkeeper straight to the unmarked Tom Hadley, who still had some work to do 20 yards out, but the clinical talisman finished neatly into an open net.

Llangoed, hurting from previous results against the Town, suddenly woke up and instantly began to press the Harbourmen back towards their own goal, chances falling to Wayne Thomas and Llion Roberts with neither able to finish.

On 42 minutes Llangoed top-scorer Carwyn Williams was set free from a lovely through ball from Wayne Thomas and on the half-volley smashed home from 18 yards, striking both bar and post before finding the net.

At the start of the second half it was much of the same with Llangoed pressing and Town soaking it up, but soon enough the pressure told when the villagers had a corner on 51 minutes which was swung in by Llion Roberts and that man again, Carwyn Williams, poked home.

The goals kept coming as on 67 minutes Williams broke down the right and cut a ball back to the edge of the penalty box for Wayne Thomas to fire in for 3-1.

Then Craig Jones, on 73 minutes, latched onto a through ball, His first touch took him wide but he still managed to beat the advancing keeper.

Finally for Llangoed, Cameron Slater was released again by Williams on the penalty spot to smash the ball into the gaping net on 84 minutes.

It was nearly six when Llion Roberts beat three men, got to the corner of the box and curled a shot which smashed the inside of the post and back into the keeper’s arms.

Town grabbed a late consolation goal when Hadley again fired a shot from outside the box which took a big deflection, sending the keeper the wrong way and finding its way home.
