Bodedern lift league crown

- Football: Gwynedd League

BODEDERN Athletic are Welsh Alliance bound after clinching the Snowdonia Fire Protection Gwynedd League title in style with a 4-0 victory at Menai Bridge Tigers.

Needing a win to make sure of the crown, but knowing a draw would probably be enough thanks to their impressive goal difference, Ricky Williams’ side left no room for doubting that they are top dogs in the tier-five league this season.

Beaten just twice in the league throughout the campaign and unbeaten since last September, the Anglesey villagers rounded things off in style with eight wins and a draw from the beginning of January to seal the championship.

And to add icing to the cake, Boded also lifted the Bob Owen Memorial Trophy to seal a double. Manager Williams said: “I said last summer after signing all the lads there was only one objective and that was to win the league and that’s what we did.

“We’ve had our disappointments along the way, but since end of January we’ve been top drawer. Roll on next season.”

Last Thursday’s curtain-closer at Menai Bridge saw Athletic start sharply with the front three looking dangerous.

It took until the 31st minute to break the deadlock as Shane Boylan ghosted in at the back post to slot home.

The rest of the half was nip and tuck and the interval arrived with a 1-0 scoreline.

Williams’ half-time team talk urged the players not to sit on what they had and to win the title in style.

The hosts looked threatened when Luke Challinor stopped a certain goal, but this woke Boded up. Challinor’s diagonal ball released Ryan Taylor and he finished expertly to send the away support delirious.

There was only one winner now as Ricky Jones’ thunderbolt of a free kick made it three. Taylor completed his brace, finishing off a nice move to make sure of the honours.

Aberffraw clinched second spot and also harbour hopes of promotion to the Welsh Alliance after a 2-1 triumph at third-place Bontnewydd.

Nathan Moore put Berffro ahead from the penalty spot and Connor Rees added a second before Gareth Edwards nabbed a late reply for Bont.

Bro Goronwy v Waunfawr was postponed as the Beganifs could not raise a team. This match is rescheduled for tonight (Wed).
