Gower blasts century

-

NORTH Wales Premier Division leaders Menai Bridge face a tricky trip to Denbigh this Saturday as they aim to stretch their 100 per cent record to seven in a row.

The Anglesey side were in ruthless form last weekend as they swept aside visitors Chirk by nine wickets.

Chirk won the toss and decided to bat first, setting a decent total of 247 all out off their 50 overs.

New Zealander Zachary Ringrose and sixth bowler Paul Lucas both returned figures of 4-50, Ashley Wood finishing with 2-33.

In reply, Bridge made light work of their mission, getting to 248-1 in just 35.3 overs for a 14-1 verdict.

Skipper Dion Holden and Jack Gower put on 139 for the first wicket before the former went for 77 off just 69 deliveries, including 13 fours and two sixes.

Wicket-keeper Gower went on to finish 114 not out off 100 balls, striking 20 boundaries and one maximum, and sharing in an unbroken second wicket stand of 109 with Danny Creek (48no).

It was Gower’s maiden century for the club.

Bangor maintained their fine start with a five-wicket decision at Brymbo.

Put into bat, the Steelmen chalked up 214 all out off 49.4 overs.

Springbok Francois Mostert led the wicket-taking charge for the travellers with 4-41 off 11.4 overs, Zain Anwar nabbing 3-49 and Andy Williams 2-39.

Bangor’s innings looked rocky at 147-5, David Winter 39, Nadeem Rehman and Mostert both 33, before Idrees Ijaz (33no) and skipper Robert Marshall (24no) put on 68 to lead their side to victory. Points: 12-3 Bangor. In the 1st XI First Division, Bethesda set 243-8 off their 50 overs against Bersham, number seven bat Jonathan Williams hitting a brilliant unbeaten 115.

With rain interrupting the game, Bersham faced a revised target of 135 off 20 overs, but could only reach 98-2, so Pesda prevailed 13-2. 1st XI Second Division: Llangollen (12) 79-5 (Ryan Taylor 3-14) Bodedern (3) 75-10.

2nd XI Premier Div: Buckley (2) 69-10 (Daniel Surgey career-best 7-11 off 8.4 overs) Menai Bridge (13) 70-4. 2nd XI West: Conwy (14) 215-4 Bethesda (1) 117-6 (Tomos Jones 42); Holyhead (13) 129-3 (Danny Williams 70, Dafydd Rhys Spens 44 no) Dolgellau (2) 128-8 (Craig Newey 3-15).
