Cerys is a truly top sports ambassador
CERYS DAVIES has reached for the sky and become a star. A pupil at Ysgol David Hughes, Menai Bridge, Cerys received the Sky Sports Living for Sport Student of the Year for Wales award at a ceremony hosted by Sky pundit and former professional boxer Johnny Nelson at Twickenham Stadium.
The Anglesey youngster picked up her trophy at a presentation celebrating the achievements of students, teachers and athlete mentors who inspired their peers and embodied the Sky Sports Living for Sport project Six Keys to Success.
These are: mental toughness, hunger to achieve, people skills, sports and life knowledge, breaking barriers and planning for success.
The ceremony included a skills session and rugby match coached by former South African international Thinus Delport and World Cup winner Heather Fisher.
Cerys, 18, is one of thousands of secondary school pupils participating in Sky Sports Living for Sport projects throughout the UK and Ireland.
The free initiative, delivered in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust, uses sport to help young people build practical skills and self-confidence.
Cerys used Ysgol David Hughes’ Sky Sports Living for Sport project, sports activities in nursing homes and communities, to inspire other students and residents of Anglesey to exercise on a more regular basis.
This was achieved through running sports sessions at her local primary school and care home, in addition to well-being sessions in the community, resulting in her receiving a silver Mon Actif volunteering award.
Cerys hopes to become a teacher and continue inspiring future generations to become more active.
She said: “My time at Ysgol David Hughes is coming to an end this summer as I will be leaving sixth form to attend university. I have been equipped with bags of knowledge, experience and confidence thanks to the Sky Sports Living for Sport scheme.
“On reflection of my seven years at school I can look back and honestly say that meeting the Sky Sports Living for Sport athlete mentors and being guided by such perfect role models has made me the bubbly and confident person I am today.
“I have learnt many new skills and attributes thanks to being involved with several Sky Sports Living for Sport projects over the last two to three years.”
Cerys’ teacher at Ysgol David Hughes, Barry Edwards, said “Cerys has been a significant role model for thousands of people. From boys and girls, to women, elderly groups and people with disabilities, Cerys strives to get every person hooked on sport regardless of their abilities, age, gender or backgrounds. She is a Sport Wales Platinum Ambassador and sits on the national steering panel.”
