Goal machine McGonigle leaves Glantraeth

-

ANGLESEY goal machine Corrig McGonigle has left Welsh Alliance League champions Glantraeth and joined Conwy Borough.

The 20-year-old, who netted 59 goals in just 35 starts for Glan in their Division One championship- winning 2016/17 campaign, will remain at that level but switches to Conwy, who have just been relegated from the Huws Gray Alliance.

McGonigle was one of four captures from Glantraeth announced by new Boro manager Gareth Thomas last week.

Iolo Hughes, Sion Hogan and Guto Hughes have also moved to Y Morfa from the Bodorgan outfit, who turned down promotion to the Huws Gray Alliance.

Others to leave Glantraeth since the end of last season include goalkeeper Ben Heald, who has returned to Llanfairpwll.

Warren Gibbs has also stepped down as manager, but insists his decision was nothing to do with the club refusing promotion.

McGonigle, who bagged 64 goals for Pentraeth the season before last, said: “I have signed for the club due to my ambition to recreate my success in the same league from season and score more goals.

“I am pleased to have signed for Conwy and looking forward to how the team are going to improve and to get back to where they belong. I am really looking forward to working with Alun (Winstanley) and Perry (manager Thomas) and to pushing Conwy upwards and onwards.”

Boss Thomas commented: “I am delighted to have captured Corig with several clubs interested in the talented forward.

“I thought I would try my luck with him as I knew he would be in demand but I am delighted he has chosen to join the club and really look forward to working with him.”

Defender Iolo Hughes was chased by several Cymru Alliance clubs but manager Thomas was able to secure his signature.

Hogan, a 24-year-old leftsided player, has also has previously played for Menai Bridge and Llanfairpwll.

Left-back Guto Hughes has also turned out for Denbigh Town and Prestatyn Town.
