AM backs foodbank in call for further support
YNYS Môn’s Assembly Member is helping to publicise an appeal for more volunteers and donations to help a food bank continue to help hundreds of people across the island.
The Anglesey Food Bank delivers food all over the island – for those who can’t travel to the food bank for example if they’re disabled, elderly, or cannot afford public transport - with volunteers sometimes travelling up to 120 miles to make sure that those in need receive fresh food.
But they are looking for more volunteers to help with the delivering work and for cash donations to help buy fresh food such as bread and milk for families who need it.
Speaking after his visit to the Food Bank based in Elim Chapel, Holyhead, Rhun ap Iorwerth said: “It is a very sad situation that we need food banks at all, and that there is so much demand on the island from people and families who have often lost their income suddenly because of illness or zero hour contracts, for example.
“But it is good to know that this service is there for those who need it. It was an eye opener to spend time with the volunteers at Holyhead, who provide food for families in all parts of the island that are facing difficulties, and it’s important that the Food Banks have the support they need to support others.
“The food bank is always looking for more volunteers, so if you can give some of your time to help this dedicated team, or if you are able to offer contributions, then please get in touch with them.”
