McGonigle is a back-to-back Brodie winner

-

CORRIG McGONIGLE completed a remarkable season by making it back-toback Bob Brodie Trophy wins - but he will not be going for the hat-trick.

The annual goalscorers’ trophy is only open to players at Anglesey clubs and with McGonigle leaving Glantraeth to join Conwy Borough this season, he will not be eligible in 2017/18.

For the past two seasons the 20-year-old goal machine has dominated the competition, named in honour of the late Ynys Mon-based manager.

In 2015/16, McGonigle amassed a trophy record 64 goals for Pentraeth and last term was 22 ahead of his nearest challengers as he netted 59 times in just 35 starts for Glan.

He may well have beaten his total of the previous season had he started the campaign at Glantraeth, but for the first six matches he was at Caernarfon Town.

McGonigle’s stunning goalgrabbing feats, which included nine hat-tricks, helped Glantraeth secure the Welsh Alliance Division One title and Cookson Cup double.

However, the Anglesey club’s decision not to accept promotion to the Huws Gray Alliance meant the striker had to consider his future and he opted to leave the club, as have many others in recent weeks.

Many expected him to move to a higher level, but he chose Conwy, relegated from the HGA to the Welsh Alliance last season.

McGonigle believes he will get back to the HGA sooner rather than later with Conwy.

The striker is delighted to become the first player to lift the Bob Brodie Trophy twice.

“I didn’t think I’d be able to retain it having started the season with Caernarfon,” he said. “But the move to Glantraeth proved prosperous and I’m honoured and delighted to have won it again.

“Obviously having good players around you helps, it’s my job to finish off the chances and having good players alongside gets you those chances.

“The Bob Brodie has always been a trophy I’ve wanted to win; to win it twice is a great feat and I can’t see any reason why in later seasons I can’t win it again, but my focus now is with Conwy.”
