Môn produce some magic at Island Games

-

YNYS Môn men’s football team had two big wins under their belts ahead of yesterday’s final group match against Isle of Man in the 17th NatWest Island Games in Gotland.

Anglesey beat the Falklands 3-0 on Sunday, thanks to a hat-trick from Holyhead Hotspur’s Kenleigh Owen.

Owen was on the mark twice again in Monday’s 5-1 thrashing of Hitra, Caernarfon Town’s Danny Brookwell adding a double and Craig Roberts of Llangefni Town one.

Hitra were reduced to 10 players when their goalkeeper was sent off.

Ynys Môn ladies lost their opener 3-0 to the Isle of Man and were beaten 4-1 by Aland, Charlotte Gill netting a late penalty for the Welsh side.

Up to Monday evening, Ynys Môn had won two silver medals and a bronze.

Iwan Parry, of Llangefni, was runner-up in the men’s high jump on Sunday.

Throughout the competition he grew in confidence and cleared 1.86, 1.90, 1.96 before his stunning third and final attempt at 1.98 metres to clinch the medal.

“To jump a PB was unexpected in those conditions so I was chuffed to bits,” said Iwan. “The support from the Ynys Môn team was amazing, and to win a medal at my second games is an incredible personal achievement.”

On Monday, Eve Goddard-Smith won silver in the women’s 100m butterfly - Anglesey’s first swimming medal at the Games in 12 years.

Connor Laverty won bronze for Môn in the men’s shotput, with a throw of 12.59.

It was a fourth bronze for the young talent in his Island Games career.

Gethin Jones finished sixth in the men’s 10,000m in 33.02.34 - beating the previous Ynys Môn record by a massive 30 seconds.
