‘Hammer-wielding arsonist’ torches car

MUM’S TERROR AS MAN ATTACKS FAMILY BMW IN EARLY HOURS

- Jez Hemming

A MOTHER was left terrified after her car was torched by an arsonist allegedly wielding a hammer in a frenzied early hours attack.

Police are looking for a man in connection with the arson at Trem y Garnedd in Bangor on June 28.

The man struck while the woman’s partner was away with the armed forces, after allegedly having an altercation with a relative of the serviceman.

He has now returned home on special leave as the mother and her two children are too frightened to go out alone.

He told our sister paper the Daily Post: “The man was banging on the door with a hammer and saying if my partner didn’t come out he was going to blow up the car.

“Thank God she didn’t come out because I don’t know what he would have done to her. She wouldn’t open the door because she had the children in the house. So he just set fire to the car.

“I don’t feel safe to leave them and go back to work until he is found.”

The family’s blue BMW was a total write-off after the attack.

The serviceman said the fire service had come and made the house “fire safe”, but his partner even needed escorting to and from the house after the terrifying ordeal.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed one appliance from Bangor had attended the incident and it was a deliberate ignition.

A spokesman for North Wales Police said: “We received a call at 3.47am reporting a car on fire.

“After examination by police and fire officers it has been classed as an arson and we are appealing for witnesses to come forward and help us with our enquiries.”
