Revenge is emphatic as Beau beat leaders
BEAUMARIS A enjoyed a huge boost to their North Wales Coast Bowls League Division A title ambitions when they achieved a resounding 10-2 revenge victory over table-toppers Min-y-Don last Saturday.
Smarting after a beating by the same margin at the Old Colwyn green in early season, the Castle team were irresistible in the home return, taking eight of the games, plus the bonus from the 209-151 points’ totals.
Arfon Jones topped Beaumaris’ solo charts on 21-6, followed by Tim Williams at 21-11, in the team’s sixth consecutive home triumph, which confirmed their fourth-from-top placing.
Bangor City, who had flirted with relegation from the division several weeks ago, continued their improve- ment and now look comfortable in sixth after dominating visitors Blaenau Ffestiniog 9-3.
Although no home bowler managed single figures at the Garth Road green, City’s most valuable contributions were by Kevin Bebbington with 21-10 and both Gwerydd Buckland and Ryan Short at 21-11.
Llanfairpwll extended their Division B title honours’ campaign with another stylish display and result, beating Caernarfon 10-2, and three single-figure efforts were featured.
The stand-out card came from Meilir Ellinson with 21-2, backed up by John Evans on 21-6 and captain Geraint Booth 21-7.
Benllech tested the other honours’ contenders Llandudno A all the way, before just going down at home 7-5, after the games had been shared equally at 5-5, with the aggregates favouring the away side by just five points, 177-182.
Most of the games were close encounters and Benllech’s best returns were by Gwyn Owen, Dennis Taylor and Mervyn Williams, all making it 21-15.
Abergele 9 Beaumaris B 3 (Brian Begley and Mike Ormond both 21-14); Bethesda 7 (Sion Roberts 21-3, Dylan Roberts 21-8, Brynmor Jones 21-9) Prestatyn Highbury 5. Trefnant 10 Holyhead 2 (Steve Hanney 21-11). Llanfairpwll exacted sweet revenge over local rivals Beaumaris in the Welsh Counties’ Bowls League, as they dominated the home return 8-2 to compensate for a 6-4 loss in the away derby in early season.
Guy Vaughan Jones submitted the villagers’ best card, at 21-4, while the winners also benefited from four narrow wins – a 21-20, a 21-19 and two at 21-18 – whereas Beaumaris’ charttopper was David P Williams on 21-11.
The Anglesey/Bangor and District Bowls League’s annual pairs’ championship will be staged at the Caernarfon club’s Aberforeshore green this coming Sunday, July 16, with a midday start.
The entry fee is £6 per pair and the organiser is the host club’s Hannah Jones-Williams, who is on 07775-325275.
