Flag day for Eisteddfod

-

YOUNGSTERS joined skilled handicraft people to create some colour for Anglesey before the National Eisteddfod’s visit to the island next month.

Eisteddfod officials linked up with Menter Iaith Môn to hold a workshop to prepare colourful flags to welcome the festival to the area.

Sacks of material were cut up into triangles and sewn onto hundreds of yards of ribbon during a workshop at Canolfan Bro Alaw, Bodedern.

Helen Williams from Menter Iaith Môn said the bunting can be displayed in homes, businesses – or even in the caravan – to show the welcome for the Eisteddfod across the island.

She said: “With only a few weeks to go until the Eisteddfod, we’re keen that everyone sees the welcome for the Eisteddfod here in Anglesey.

“But there were other reasons to get involved in events like these, as they’re a chance for people to get together to socialise through the medium of Welsh.

“It’s important we do our best to ensure there are a wide range of activities held in our communities which appeal to people of all ages and give people the chance to use Welsh at grassroots level.”

Much of the material used to make the bunting came from Tyddyn Mon, the co-operative venture near Moelfre which collects and recycles clothes.

Gwenllïan Carr from the National Eisteddfod added: “We know our visitors love seeing the welcome in different areas, and flags and colourful posters are an easy way to show this. This is the first time we have organised an event like this to encourage the community to come together to create flags.

“The WI, Merched y Wawr and Cymdeithas Brodwaith Cymru showed their support for the idea, and the youngsters from Ysgol Morswyn, Holyhead, really enjoyed their visit to create bunting.”

The Anglesey National Eisteddfod will be held at Bodedern from August 4-12. For more information go to the Eisteddfod website, www.eisteddfod. wales
