SPARED JAIL AFTER STABBING HUSBAND WITH SCISSORS

-

A WOMAN who admitted stabbing her husband of 30 years with a pair of scissors has been spared jail.

Mair Wyn Owen struck hubby Keith in the chest and arm after he had emptied a food recycling bin over her as she slept.

The 57-year-old admitted unlawful wounding. She was handed an 18-month community order and must undergo a nine-month alcohol treatment course.

The couple have two adult children, and Judge Huw Rees told Caernarfon Crown Court last week: “Evidently you have had happy times in that marriage and you wish to continue with it.

“Like most couples you have had your ups and downs, but (on this occasion) you had too much to drink and an argument ensued.”

He warned if she failed to comply with the order she could be jailed, and Owen, who had sobbed continually during the 35-minute hearing, thanked the judge as she left the dock.

Ffion Tomos, prosecuting, said police were alerted to the incident by the ambulance service at 11.45pm on July 15.

She said: “They had both been drinking alcohol and had a heated argument. She had gone to bed and was asleep when her husband emptied the food recycling bin over her.

“She woke up and found the bed in a mess with food in her hair and went to the bathroom.

“Her husband was already there and she grabbed a pair of surgical toenail cutting scissors and stabbed him in a bicep and the chest, causing puncture wounds.

Police found Owen in a bedroom of the couple’s home in Ffordd Lligwy, Moelfre, but Mr Owen refused to engage with the officers.

“A search found the scissors in the bathroom in a pool of blood and she was arrested,” added Ms Tomos.

Owen told officers what had happened and she was charged and remanded in custody.

The court was told Owen had no previous convictions but police had been called to domestic incidents at the property several times.

Brian Treadwell, defending, said Owen regretted her behaviour and was remorseful.

“She accepts what she did was wrong but there is clearly a background to the incident,” he said.

The barrister added Owen had suffered personal problems and had used alcohol as a coping mechanism.
