Looking like a two-horse race for Premier title

BANGOR and Menai Bridge look to have it between them in the North Wales Cricket League Premier Division title race.

After both recording convincing victories last weekend, the Citizens top the table on 203 points from 19 matches, while the Anglesey side have 192 from the same number of fixtures.

This Saturday, Bangor visit Hawarden Park and Menai host next-to-bottom Mochdre.

The battle to be crowned champions could yet come down to the final Saturday of the season, when the Bridge welcome their neighbours to Tyn-y-Caeau.

The top four currently stand:

DENBIGH: Played 19 Pts 177 To play: Sep 2, St Asaph (a); Sep 9, Brymbo (h); Sep 16, Gresford (a).

ST ASAPH: Played 19 Pts 176 To play: Sep 2 - Denbigh (h); Sep 9 - Bangor (a); Sep 16 - Mochdre (h).

Last Saturday, Bangor comfortabl­y saw off Gresford at Tŷ Newydd.

The Citizens, who won the toss and elected to bat, set a modest 180-8 off their 50 overs, David Winter best with 43, while Daniel Williams snared 5-39 for the visitors.

Gresford slumped to 19-3 in response and ended up 111 all out.

Francois Mostert grabbed 4-37 and Gareth Edwards 3-11 off 11 overs as the hosts recorded a 13-2 triumph.

Menai Bridge stayed in the title picture after a 12-3 verdict at Llandudno which included a ton for former skipper Robbie Jones.

Jones posted 102 and Arwel Thomas 57, the pair sharing a stand of 145 for the fourth wicket as the Anglesey side, who opted for first knock, piled up 231-6 off 50 overs.

Tudno were dismissed for 200, Bridge captain Dion Holden the stand-out bowler with 6-40, Ashley Wood 2-27.

Bethesda suffered an eighth straight defeat in the 1st XI First Division as they crashed 15-0 at Mold.

Put into bat, Mold closed on 207-8 off 50 overs, Gareth Jones taking 4-47 for Pesda, Richard Lee Williams 2-23 and Gareth V Edwards 2-43.

Bethesda then slumped to 87 all out, Jamie Ryle 6-39 for the hosts.

Bodedern head the 1st XI Second Division after a 12-3 home success over Ruthin.

Gareth Thomas struck 86 and Edward Gadsby 31 as the Anglesey men were all out for 223, then the visitors were limited to 181-5, Leighton Williams 2-30.

Menai Bridge ensured they would finish in the 2nd XI Premier Division top two after Cefyn Owen’s 103 helped seal a 21-run victory over visitors Denbigh.

Owen dominated in Bridge’s total of 217-5, James Jones adding 54, then Denbigh were bowled out for 196.

Callum Andrews took 2-32, Paul Lucas 2-38 and James Jones 2-39.

Bethesda seconds were skittled out for a pitiful 31 by Caernarfon, who made 33 without loss in reply for a 15-0 verdict in Division 2 West.
