Champions want to sign off with victory

-

BANGOR Cricket Club are determined to celebrate their first top division title win for 15 years in style this weekend.

In their final match of the season, the Citizens travel to neighbours Menai Bridge, aiming to put the icing on the cake with another victory.

Bridge have clinched runners-up spot in the Premier Division and will be out to play the party poopers’ role at Tyn-y-Caeau.

However, nothing could truly take the gloss off the achievement of Bangor, who secured the title last Saturday with a six-wicket win over St Asaph at Ty Newydd.

This success completed a remarkable treble for the club whose second and third teams also finished top of their respective divisions.

Bangor first-team skipper Robbie Marshall said: “I’m immensely proud of the team and the club.

“The team have been fantastic all season and the standards they have set all season have been great.

“Everyone has contributed to our success and the success of the club, it has been a memorable season and an honour to captain a great club.

“However, there is one more game to go and we are desperate to finish the season on a massive high.”

Bangor’s meeting with St Asaph was reduced to 25 overs per side due to rain. Saints were put into bat and set a total of 120-8, Australian Nathanael Scott with 52.

For the home side, Nadeem Rehman claimed 2-23, Francois Mostert 2-24 and Gareth W Edwards 2-35.

Rehman was then the star with the bat, his commanding 72 not out leading the Citizens to 121-4 with eight balls to spare. The all-rounder put on 50 for the first wicket with David Winter as Bangor collected the points 13-2 and a first championship since 2002.

Menai Bridge chose to bat first at Connah’s Quay in a contest cut to 36 overs apiece because of the weather.

The Anglesey side posted a useful 203-9, Gethin Roberts leading the charge with an unbeaten 89 off just 64 balls

Lee Davies claimed 3-55 for the hosts, Darren Leach 2-26 and Brendan Bezuidenhout 2-39.

David Fox took centre stage in the Deesiders’ response, hitting 103 not out in a winning score of 204-7 from 33.1 overs, Luke Bennett adding a vital 35, while Zachary Ringrose pocketed 4-30 for the Bridge. Quay took the win 11-4.

In the 1st XI First Division, Bethesda made 157 at promoted Pwllheli, Michael Jennings 50, and could not prevent the hosts reaching 158-3, Jason Underwood 109, for a 13-2 points success, Andrew Day 2-8 for the visitors.

Menai Bridge lost by just three runs at home to Mochdre in the 2nd XI Premier Division.

The visitors set 136 all out, Daniel Surgey 6-27, and the Bridge were limited to 133-9 in the 35 overs per side contest, Josh Massey 46 and Callum Andrews 35.
