-

OLIVER and Olivia have been crowned the most popular baby names in Wales last year.

Oliver has been the top boys’ name since 2013 with Olivia ending Amelia’s five year reign as the most popular girls’ name.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the results were based on the names given on birth certificates.

In a nod to celebrity trends Harper has seen the biggest rise in popularity, up 22 places from last year. Harper Beckham, daughter to David and Victoria Beckham, was born in 2011.

Ffion featured at number 25, down five places from last year and Osian featured at number 27, down two places.

Royal baby names George and Charlotte both featured in the top 20 baby names.

Four new entries, Felicity, Iris, Luna and Lydia, entered the top 100 for girls’ names last year.

Albie, Arlo, Ezra, Finn, Jasper and Jesse entered the top 100 names for baby boys in 2016.

ONS statistician Nick Stripe said: “With over 696,000 babies born in England and Wales in 2016, and nearly 64,000 different names chosen for them, it’s interesting how relatively stable the top 10 names have been.

“It is as you move down the rankings that you begin to notice social and cultural changes being reflected in name choices.”

Names that have made it to the top 10 include Isla, Amelia, Oscar and Harry.
